Bishop's Park

Surrounding the Old Bishop's Palace and Carmarthenshire Museum is the beautiful Bishop's Park.

Restored and enhanced since 2018, the Park is under the care of Parc yr Esgob, a charity formed to "promote for the benefit of the public at the Bishop’s Park and its cultural setting in Abergwili the conservation, protection, improvement and understanding of the built and natural environments."

You're welcome to wander along the network of paths that extend to the Bishop's Pond and the Tywi Valley Path, or spread out on the formal lawn and relax, admiring the views of the Old Palace and the Great Meadow. Benches and tables line all the pathways and the lawn, offering plenty of opportunities for peaceful reflection or a sociable picnic.

Wildflowers and wildlife are being encouraged all around the Park, with plenty of flowering plants throughout every season, all of native varieties. From primroses and celandines, bluebells and yellow rattle, the Park is full of diversity and life. You might also spot many non-native trees, which are reminders of when previous Bishops brought in species from overseas to keep up with fashionable tastes for the 'exotic'. The Monkey Puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana) is from Chile, and the Dawn Redwood tree (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) from China, is the tallest of its kind growing in Carmarthenshire.

The next phase of development in the Park is the Walled Garden Restoration Project. As well as rebuilding three historic glasshouses and the gardener’s bothy, the carefully designed restoration will create a multi-functional facility for learning, training, health recovery, wellbeing and celebration events. The project will also bring the stories of those who once lived and worked there vividly back to life. Keep an eye out for the occasional public tours of the walled garden.
