About the Museum of Land Speed
Our Story
The Museum of Land Speed is the newest member of the CofGâr family. Opened in May 2023, the museum was the centrepiece of the ambitious Pendine Tourism Attractor Project, which aims to promote Pendine’s cultural and natural heritage. The project also included the development of the Caban accommodation next door to the museum and other facilities around the village.
The new museum replaced the former Museum of Speed on the same site. The original museum existed from 1997 until 2018, telling the story of the iconic land speed record attempts made on Pendine beach. Its popularity with visitors quickly grew too much for its small size.
The reborn museum was designed to be fun, interactive, and a model of sustainability. Built to Passivhaus principles, hands-on exhibits showcase the science of speed, while audiovisual displays highlight the drama of motor racing. For up to 10 weeks a year, the museum also hosts the world-famous land speed record breaking car, known as Babs.
In 2024, at the end of its first full year of opening, the museum achieved the Best Attraction Award in the Carmarthenshire Tourism Association Awards. Following shortly after was confirmation of its accredited museum status by the Welsh Government. Then, in 2025, the museum was a finalist in the British Guild of Travel Writers International Tourism Awards.
