About the Boathouse

Our Story

The Dylan Thomas Boathouse (and Writing Shed) was the last home of Wales's most famous poet, Dylan Thomas, who lived here with his family for four years between 1949 and 1953. Situated along the Wales Coastal Path, a short distance from Laugharne town centre, this was the place where Dylan completed some of his most famous works. Dan Y Wenallt (Under Milk Wood) may have been inspired by Laugharne and its colourful characters.

The Boathouse is leased to Carmarthenshire County Council under a 999-year peppercorn rent from Laugharne Corporation. Built in the early 1800s, the Boathouse was managed by the Council’s Arts Service from 1988, until joining the CofGâr family in 2023. As a valued member of our family, we’re now working on achieving museum accreditation for the first time in its history, giving it equal status to the other museums in our care that are open to the public.
