Writing Shed

Dylan’s Writing Shed is the first part of the property you’ll see if walking along the Wales Coastal Path from Laugharne. Many visitors mistake this for the Boathouse!

A family visits a small shed beside a coastal path. One adult holds a young child while standing outside the pale green wooden shed, and another child peers through a narrow window in the door.

The Shed was built to house Laugharne’s first motor car, well before Dylan’s time. When he and his family arrived at the Boathouse, the Shed quickly became the place where he felt comfortable writing and reciting his works. It offered the perfect mix of inspiring views and a quiet environment to play with words.

Dressed messily to match the popular image of Dylan Thomas, he was in fact a very tidy and organised writer. Although his favourite boiled sweets on the desk helped to keep him going. The walls are covered with replicas of the types of pictures with which Caitlin decorated it.

Visitors can book guided tours that take in the Writing Shed from the Boathouse gift shop. These tours are the perfect way to complete your visit and to understand why this place continues to inspire people from all over the world.
