Workshops at the Museum of Land Speed
Forces and Friction Workshop
(Suitable for Key Stages 2 – 3)
This energetic, hands‑on workshop introduces pupils to the science of forces and friction through exciting practical experiments using balloon‑powered cars. Learners test their cars on a range of different surfaces, observing how friction affects speed, movement, and distance travelled. By comparing results and discussing what they notice, pupils build a strong understanding of how forces work in real‑world situations — all within the inspiring setting of the Museum of Land Speed.

Drag and Safety Workshop
(Suitable for Key Stages 2 – 3)
In this creative, experiment‑rich workshop, pupils explore air resistance and the science of staying safe through the design and testing of their own parachutes. Using tissue paper, string, tape, and any extra materials they think might help, learners build parachutes before creating a small clay “person” to take the ride. They then test their designs, observing how their parachute falls, how their clay figure lands, and whether it would have survived without injury. After analysing the results, pupils experiment with materials such as cotton wool and bubble wrap to absorb impact and improve their design. This fun, hands‑on session helps learners understand drag, air resistance, and safety in a memorable, practical way.
Beach Activities Workshop
(Suitable for all ages)
Our beach activities offer pupils an exciting mix of movement, science, and coastal exploration — all set against the stunning backdrop of Pendine Sands. Learners experience air resistance by running with parachutes, test teamwork and strength in a lively tug of war, and experiment with wind power while flying kites. They can also use our resources to investigate the rock pools and discover the wildlife living along the shoreline. These activities are completely free of charge, but schools must let us know in advance if they would like to include them in their visit. As they rely on suitable weather and tide times, there is always a possibility that they may not be able to go ahead on the day.
