Witches, wizards and not a scrap of plastic

Have a sustainable Halloween at CofGâr!

Join us at Carmarthenshire Museum and Parc Howard Museum during autumn half-term for a programme of potion-making, broom-making, folk tales and theatre that shows Halloween can be great fun without the waste. And there are plenty of pumpkins too!

The events are part of the Welsh Museums Festival, which runs across Wales every autumn half term. This year’s festival theme is Sustainable Hwyl, and the museum has taken it to heart.

On Thursday 29 October at Carmarthenshire Museum, families can mix natural potions using herbs and other sustainable ingredients, make their own brooms from natural materials while learning a traditional craft, and create bat-themed crafts from recycled materials; a chance to talk about the bats and other wildlife that share our homes and gardens, and how to look after them.

On the same day, a local actor will lead storytelling tours of the museum, sharing folklore and seasonal tales from across Carmarthenshire.

On Friday 30 October, Adam Jones (Adam Yn Yr Ardd) will be at Parc Howard Museum to show families how to use every part of a pumpkin during its life cycle, as well as carving them to take home.

Back at Carmarthenshire Museum on Saturday 31 October, Halloween itself, local theatre groups will bring the galleries to life with costumed Spooktacular Drama sessions.

Throughout half term, a pumpkin trail will wind through the galleries at Carmarthenshire Museum. There are no printed posters or plastic decorations; every pumpkin on the trail has been crocheted by hand. Children who complete the trail and the wizarding challenges will take home pumpkin seeds planted in a biodegradable cardboard pot, with growing instructions and a certificate printed on recycled paper, so the fun carries on at home long after Halloween.

There's also a trail that stops indoors and outdoors at Parc Howard Museum that will run all week. The Parc Howard Association will co-host, stewarding the trail and providing volunteers.
