Families at the Dylan Thomas Boathouse

Kids in Museums Manifesto logo
We've joined the Kids in Museums Manifesto!

We welcome visitors of all ages to discover the last family home of Dylan Thomas

The Boathouse was where Dylan and his family spent four years together, along a winding path, just outside the town of Laugharne.

Whether you have "howling families of thieves and vagabonds" or you'd simply like to play "Snakes and Families and Happy Ladders", you'll find a warm welcome at the Boathouse.

Always on Christmas night there was music. An uncle played the fiddle, a cousin sang 'Cherry Ripe', and another uncle sang 'Drake's Drum'. It was very warm in the little house.

Facilities for families

Food and drink

Menu

Y Gegin Gartref is well stocked with light lunches, snacks, drinks and ice creams for the whole family.

Check out our menu for more information and the specials board on site.

Seating

You're welcome to find a table inside the tearoom or outside on the terrace. During the summer months, we extend the seating area outside to the patio area, which used to be the old harbour.

There is another bench in the garden at the front of the Boathouse and plenty more seating along the Wales Coastal Path.

Baby changing

Available in the gender neutral toilet facing Sir John's Hill.

Buggies and pushchairs

The Boathouse is not accessible for buggies or pushchairs. The building can only be reached down more than 40 steps from the Wales Coastal Path. There are more steps inside to the exhibition area and to Y Gegin Gartref.

Breastfeeding

You’re welcome to breastfeed anywhere in the Boathouse.

Please ask our Visitor Services team to point you in the direction of a quieter space if you’d prefer more privacy.

Accessibility

Exhibition Gallery

The top floor of the Boathouse once hosted the family bedrooms. One was Dylan and Caitlin’s bedroom and the other, Aeronwy and Colm’s bedroom, their two youngest children. Llewelyn’s room was downstairs in the Gift Shop.

        Writing Shed

Dylan’s Writing Shed is the first part of the property you’ll see if walking along the Wales Coastal Path from Laugharne. Many visitors mistake this for the Boathouse!
